When you get to the Windsheim camp, you find that some
other young Jews have already organized a chapter of the
Zionist group called Betar.
They are determined to become
strong and never again allow the world to persecute them or other Jews.
Mostly, they want passionately to go to Palestine.
A representative from the Jewish Agency by the name of Yehuda Arazi meets with your group and tells you that it is possible to sneak you out of the camp, through Switzerland and Italy and across the Mediterranean into Palestine. It will be dangerous, he tells you, but everyone in the group agrees to go, no matter what the cost.
British army trucks pull up to the camp, and you climb aboard. Later, as the convoy rumbles through Italy, you discover that this is an entirely fake unit. The 462nd Transport Company looks like a British army unit, but it really belongs to the Jewish Brigade in Bari. They've painted trucks and acquired fake documents so that they can rescue Jews and bring them to Palestine.
Arazi was right; the trip is not easy. You must sneak right under the noses of the British Soldiers guarding Haifa. But you succeed, and you are glad.
After the War of Independence, you enroll at the Technion, Israel's new science university, and train to become an engineer. You will become one of the builders of the new land.
