When you finally arrive in New York City, you have very little money and no friends. You turn to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society to get help finding a place to live and a job. They are able to give you some assistance, but you discover, to your dismay, that some American Jews are not pleased that you and other European Jewish refugees are arriving in the United States. They think that your accent and different ways will reflect badly on them, that non-Jewish Americans will look upon all Jews as foreigners.

HIAS is able to offer you two options for the immediate future: You can work in a small store on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where you live, or you can take a janitor's job with Aufbau, a German-Jewish newspaper published in the city.
