The question is how to hide. Berlin is the capital of the Third Reich, a city full of police and soldiers. Everyday, one hears stories of Jews who have been turned over to the Gestapo by friends who had promised to conceal and protect them. You have made many good friends during the years that you studied in the city, but now you are not sure whom you can trust.

On the other hand, no one can survive alone for long. To buy food you must stand in long lines and produce proper identification; stolen or forged documents are spotted easily, and their users arrested. The same is true of housing; it's impossible to rent a room without risking discovery. Besides, where would you be able to get money, now Jews cannot obtain work?

You think about your non-Jewish friends. There were some people at the university who were more cordial than others. Perhaps you ought to trust them; what choice do you have?

Yet you are unsure of some of the people; in any case, you don't want to endanger their lives by asking them to hide you. Perhaps a Christian church will assist you. This may be a better idea.
