As your bus travels the short distance between Paris and Drancy, the driver is forced to slow up for a narrow bridge. As the bus leaves the bridge, you hear the sound of an explosion and see a bright flash. Suddenly the bus lurches to the right and then falls over into a ditch. Because the guards are dazed, you are able to open the emergency door and quickly slip out.
Outside the bus, you are met by three men, in rough working clothes with blue berets, who look like farmers. They speak French, but you need to understand one word: Maquis. They rush you away from the road and hide you until nightfall under a haystack.
Late at night, they come back with food and a change of clothing.
The leader explains: We can help you get into Switzerland where you will
be safe. While it is not easy, we can make arrangements.
He also offers
you another choice: Join the resistance and fight the Germans.
If you choose to seek safety in Switzerland, continue to page 147.
If you elect to join the resistance, continue to page 148.
